Criminally vandalising 200 of the 260 fleet of ambulances meant for 102 emergency service for Delhi, the contractual employees of the BVG-UKSAS EMS PVT Ltd, have gone on a lightning strike last night bringing the life-saving essential serve to a grinding halt. The ambulance drivers and paramedical workers belonging to the Centralized Ambulance and Trauma Services (CATS) have stopped work without giving any prior notice following a disciplinary action taken against a worker by BVG-UKSAS. The paramedic worker in question Rajveer Singh Chouhan did not report to work since October 20 without giving any reason. When asked to explain for his dereliction of duty in a life-saving service, Chouhan, along with at least 10 other workers barged into the office of BVG and threatened to go on strike.

He even misbehaved with the BVG-UKSAS senior officers, which included women staff. He went onto text message other workers who gathered in large numbers at the CATS Control Room, Laxmi Nagar. An unruly mob gathered within minutes and started threatening to go on strike and warning BVG-UKSAS of dire consequences if the matter was reported to the police. BVG-UKSAS staff mustered courage and called in the police for help. The Shakarpur PCR arrived in time and took Chouhan away to the police station. Having taken statements from BVG, the Shakarpur police is investigating the matter. BVG-UKSAS EMS PVT filed a complaint against Chauhan for threatening to sabotage ambulance services in Delhi. Mr MK Rawat, Head Operations, BVG India Ltd said: This unfortunate incident has happened due to the anti-social elements among the contractual employees. We strongly condemn it. We hope better sense will prevail and that we will be able to resume normal services soon. We shall take all necessary action to get ambulances repaired on a war footing. We sincerely regret the convenience caused to the people of Delhi, but we are helpless under these circumstances, Mr Rawat said. This is not the first time that CATS workers have indulged in negligence at work and sabotage of emergency ambulance services. BVG-UKSAS had earlier reported to CATS about several similar incidents of workers sabotaging ambulance services by damaging vehicles, oxygen cylinders, consuming liquor on duty, and not carrying out their required duties.

The contract workers also burnt and deflated the tyres of the ambulances hindering the operations. As many as 200 odd ambulances meant for critical support were vandalised by the striking employees. BVG has been trying to convince workers but all conciliatory efforts have gone in vain as the strike has become a habit now with these irresponsible workers literally blackmailing the CATS management. It is shocking that the striking workers want BVG to apologise for asking the erring workers for explanation for such a long absence in an emergency service, and, on top of that not to take any disciplinary action against him. In another strange development, CATS has threatened to take action against BVG if the latter did not take any steps to settle the strike. BVG-UKSAS, on its part, is also consulting its legal counsel for taking further action in the interest of the emergency service for the people of Delhi.
