Indian athlete, Deepa Malik from Sonipat has made the country proud by winning a silver medal in the women's shot put F53 event at the 2016 Rio Paralympics Games. Along with several others, Bollywood came out in full support and lauded her efforts on Twitter. Amitabh Bachchan shared on Twitter: "Deepa Malik... You made all India proud by winning the Silver at the ParaOlympics. Such an emotion to see the Tiranga (Indian flag) go up!" . Hema Malini said she was proud of Malik, who recorded her personal best of 4.61 metres at the 2016 Rio Paralympics Games on Monday. She tweeted "Deepa Malik creates history by winning the silver medal the shot put event of the Paralympics! India is proud of you Deepa!" After bagging the silver, an excited Malik said she wants to "use the medal to support women with disabilities in India".

Mariyappan Thangavelu won the gold medal in the Men's High Jump T42 category on Friday with fellow Indian Varun Bhati taking bronze in the same event. Deepa has thus confirmed India's third medal from the Paralympic Games. India's tally at this edition of the Paralympics now stands at one gold, one silver and a bronze.Deepa, a paraplegic, paralysed from the waist down, received the Arjuna award in 2012. She is the mother of two children and the wife of a veteran cavalier Colonel Bikram Singh and daughter of a veteran Infantry Colonel BK Nagpal.The 45-year-old Indian athlete has registered her name twice in the Limca Book of Records, once for crossing a 1 km stretch of the Yamuna river against the current in 2008, and then again for covering 58 km by riding a special bike in 2013.
