India Meteorological Department has already decrlared that the cyclonic storm 'OCKHI' is very likely to move north-northeastwards of Mumbai and there will be light to moderate rains or thunderstorms in Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra. And this was the reason, the state Government declared holiday for school and colleges. However, there are numerous forwards on WhatsApp making the rounds causing panic among Mumbaikars and travellers. It's high time we stop panicking because of these unauthentic WhatsApp forwards. Here is a list of few forwards that are in circulation and we request you to STOP forwarding these. You can go through the forecast and warnings by India Meteorological Department on the cyclonic storm 'OCKHI'.
#1. "BMC alert.. If the rain doesn't stop or slow down, the electricity will be cut off.. Please charge up your cellphones and inform it to others too.. Helpline 1916 declared by BMC...Please fwd to as many as u can". If that was the case, the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) would have released an official announcement.
#2. Another forward that is doing rounds is -- "Worli Sea Link Closed for expected Cyclone at 3.00 PM. Pedder road is closed. Sion bridge is shut all cars have been told to take u turn and go back. SV Road from Bandra to Santa Cruz is close due to rain. Bandra linking road flooding. (Forwarded as received) from a journalist."
#3. Not just texts, even videos are being forwarded on WhatsApp showing water levels rising over a bridge and bridge collapsing due to rains in Mumbai and cyclone Ockhi. However, this is not a real video but a fake one. If you have received this video, please do not forward causing unnecessary tension in general public.
India Meteorological Department informed that cyclone OCKHI is 230km West- SouthWest of Mumbai and is likely to continue to move North-NorthEastward, and will weaken gradually and will cross South Gujarat and North Maharashtra coast. It will have no impact on Mumbai City and Suburb. All Roads & Rails traffic are running smoothly, please don't create panic.
