The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has recently issued a red alert for extremely heavy rain across parts of Tamil Nadu over the next 48 hours as Cyclone Ditwah edges closer to the Southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Sri Lankan coast. The IMD in its recent post on X warned that Cyclone Ditwah is moving North-Northwest and is expected near the North Tamil Nadu Puducherry South Andhra Pradesh coast.

The Post read, "The Cyclonic storm over the southwest Bay of Bengal is moving North - Northwest and is expected near the North Tamil Nadu Puducherry South Andhra Pradesh coast by early November 30. Residents are advised to follow safety instructions and stay indoors during severe weather."

Taking cognizance of the situation, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Earlier warned its residents to stay indoors as the cyclonic storm moved towards the state. Following a review meeting, CM Stalin alerted Tamil Nadu residents to stay indoors and take certain precautions. His post on X read, "Met with the Central Team to address the severe impact of #CycloneMichaung on Chennai and adjoining districts. We've submitted a comprehensive memorandum seeking Rs 7,033 Cr as interim relief and Rs 12,659 Cr as permanent relief.

Things To Do Before, During And After The Storm

Here are few things you must do before, during and after a cyclonic storm:

  • Stay alert for official cyclone warnings.
  • Follow the IMD website for the latest updates.
  • Install storm shutters or replace glass windows.
  • Always keep your windows and doors closed.
  • Switch off electrical mains in your house.
  • Ensure to park your car with the hand brake beneath a solid shelter.
  • If officials ask you to evacuate your house, move to a house built on high ground.
  • Stay indoors after a cyclonic storm as there will be wind gusts from the opposite direction.
  • Be careful of concrete walls and floors because lightning can sometimes pass through them.
  • Eat fresh dry food and keep it away from pests and flies.
  • Boil water before drinking or cooking.
  • Keep your surroundings clean by using disinfectants.
  • Cover the drains to prevent backflow of sewage.
  • Clear debris from your premises.
  • Stay in the shelter until you receive proper information regarding safety in moving outside.
  • Drive your car carefully after the cyclone passes.
