Women don't talk about menstruation freely. We still walk till the washroom with the pad carefully hidden away in a hanky or a bag. But things are gradually changing. Many women are speaking of menstruation openly and are collectively working towards getting rid of the stigma attached. While their efforts are really other helping women, here is some news that will make you happy. Mumbai-based Culture Machine Media Pvt. Ltd (runs a popular YouTube channel called 'Blush') has become the first company in India to offer the first day of period policy(FOP). According to the policy, they offer leaves to its female employees on the first day of their period. The company currently has 75 women, which means loss of 75 working days and it is no joke to take such a drastic step. This news has made all of us so proud of the company. As a woman even though I am not the part of the company, this news makes me feel secure and equally happy.
No matter how much people disregard the fact that life is tougher for women, facts don't change. And I am talking daily life, the regular life that each woman has to go through. The fact that we bleed every month and go through so much pain making it the most dreaded one week of every month. But does that stop us from making our livelihood? To be honest, it does cause discomfort. And if we take life as a race, I would call it unfair on our part especially during those days of the month. It is more like an average race for men and a hurdle race for us. But I believe, this step taken by this company isn't just helping those 75 women in the company. It is a remarkable example set for the rest of us. We hear of so many school girls who are unable to go to school during their periods because of non-availability of pads and horrific incidents of women in rural areas being forced to use things like hay, ashes and soiled tattered clothes because they can't afford pads.
This step taken by this company is like a breeze of fresh air. More than anything it seems like the beginning of a revolution. Kudos to the decision maker. This is great news for the women working for the company and for all the woman across India. Here's the video that the channel made in this regards:
