Crib deaths are back to haunt West Bengal hospitals with at least eight infants dying at the Malda Medical College Hospital (MMCH) in Malda district since Wednesday. In the last 24 hours, eight babies, all below one year of age, have died in the hospital. The babies were born premature and were suffering from low weight and respiratory problems, MMCH principal Uchchal Bhadra said. Following the deaths, a seven-member committee under chief medical officer of health (CMOH), Malda, has been formed to probe the matter and asked to submit its report by Friday, he said. The hospital alone had witnessed over 200 crib deaths last year.
This recent spurt in crib deaths is sure to harangue Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee whose election promises of poriborton after years of decadent Left rule isn t turning out to be exactly what the dwellers of West Bengal had hoped for. Ironically, the TMC election manifesto had promised significant healthcare service improvements and promised to revamp primary health centres, district hospitals, sub-divisional hospital and super-specialty apex hospitals. In 2011, 109 babies died at Malda Medical College and Hospital, and 48 at BC Roy in 2011 but the government seems to have done nothing except creating a task force.
