CRIB, this has been discovered by scientists from India and the UK and this blood group was found in a 38-year-old woman. Recently, scientists in India have found a new and extremely rare blood group called CRIB.
A 38-year-old woman from Kolar, near Bengaluru, was identified with a very rare blood group called CRIB, and according to experts, it may be rare to find such a blood group. She is currently the only person in the whole world to own this blood group.
CRIB acronym stands for chromosome region, identified as a blood group. It also has symbolic significance due to its impact on newborn and fetal medicine. The CRIB blood group it's a type of blood group that does not fall in the category of ABO and RH systems and is newly discovered, and it's exceptional.
Something that sets crib apart is the absence of a high antigen that is present in most individuals, and people who have this blood group do not possess. This antigen and blood transfusion can become difficult as only that would work out, making the donor exceptionally rare.
This blood group is classified under the INRA ( Indian Rare Antigen ) system, which was recognised by the International Society of Blood Transfusion in 2022.
A health expert reveals the uniqueness of this case, "A specific antigen defines all blood groups is and in total, there are 47 internationally recognised blood group systems, but mostly people are aware of ABO and RH blood group systems.
Digging more into the root cause, it turned out that it was an unidentified antigen present in the Cromer blood group system, which is also linked to proteins in red blood cell membranes, but before this, there was no discovery of crib as such.
This consists of several antigens and it is found in most people and while others are extremely rare individuals develop antibodies against them with factors linked to pregnancy, genetic mutation and previous blood transfusion is in such cases, a woman had never received a transmission because every unit of donor blood was incompatible.
It has caused different reactions from everywhere, as its existence is extremely rare, and it did not exist in any blood bank. The situation turned out to be so complex that the doctor decided to perform her surgery without a transfusion, which was also risky and carefully managed.
It was invented in 1630’s by a famous courtier and gambler.
It was discovered in 2025 during a cardiac operation in Bengaluru in a 38 year old Kolar woman.
