CPCB Warning: High Levels Of Faecal Coliform Detected At Sangam During Maha Kumbh Mela
A recent report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on Monday informed of high levels of faecal coliform in the river water at Triveni Sangam where thousands of devotees rook a holy dip during Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. As per the report, the quality of the river water at the confluence of river Ganga and Yamuna has failed to meet the primary standards for bathing or taking a dip which is termed 'Amrit Snan.' This issue is alarming as millions of devotees have been visiting Prayagraj since January 13 to take the holy dip, especially on auspicious days. Increased levels of bacteria in the water creates a larger concern as the Maha Kumbh mela is scheduled to continue till the 26th of February.
The report dated February 3 stated that the faecal coliform levels at the locations where devotees are taking a holy dip were monitored and all of them were above the permissible limit of 2,500 units per 100 ml. This indicates severe sewage contamination. NGT and CPCB stated that the contamination is from both animal and humas faeces. Since January 13, more than 54.31 crore devotees have bathed at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj.
The findings were reviewed by an NGT bench comprising Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Judicial Member Justice Sudhir Agarwal, and Expert Member A Senthil Vel. The tribunal is currently overseeing efforts to prevent sewage discharge into the rivers, ensuring water quality remains suitable for bathing.
