Covid vaccination drives have recently started in India for pregnant women. It is the biggest move taken by the government. Though the pregnant women are not more prone to the covid infection, it is a well-known fact that if pregnant women catch the infection, then their condition can deteriorate very fast. That is why this vaccination drive is very important. But since there are not many studies on the adverse effect of vaccines on pregnant women, we need to be very careful. Here Dr. Amodita Ahuja, Consultant Obstetrician, Gynecologist, laparoscopic surgeon and infertility Specialist, will tell you what a pregnant woman should do before, during and after getting the Covid-19 vaccine.

"Before taking the decision of taking the vaccine it is advisable that pregnant women should talk to their gynecologist and take opinion whether they should take their vaccine shot or not and if yes, then which vaccine. Make these things clear with your doctor and then proceed on to take your slot. Also, inform your slot to your gynecologist so that she is well informed that you are going for vaccination," said the Delhi-based Gynecologist.

Below are a few things that Dr. Amodita suggests pregnant patients to do before, during and after getting the shot.

Things to keep in mind before and during vaccination

  • The day before vaccination, keep yourself hydrated, have a good 8 hours sleep and have a light meal just before going for the vaccination.
  • Wear loose clothes especially from the arms so that vaccines can be given easily.
  • If you have any history of prior allergic reaction to any medication, make sure to tell the concerned authorities at the center.
  • While at the center follow all covid protocols like wearing a double mask, don't touch the front part of the mask, don't touch surfaces, maintain social distance.

What pregnant women should do post vaccination

  • After taking the vaccine, wait for at least 30 minutes, because most of the adverse effects appear in the first 30 minutes.
  • After going home if you experience any symptoms like fever, body pain, headaches, joint pain then take paracetamol after informing your gynecologist.
  • If you have a sore forearm, then applying a heat pack will provide a lot of relief.
  • Continue your supplementation of iron, calcium. Along with that, take vitamin E and vitamin D supplementation as it will help in faster recovery.
  • Take rest for the entire day and keep yourself hydrated the day you get your vaccination.
  • If you are in your last trimester then take a note of fetal movements. And if anytime you feel that fetal movements are less, then rush to the hospital immediately.
  • If the mild symptoms don't subside or become worse, immediately contact your gynecologist.

The union Health Ministry recently allowed pregnant women in India to get vaccinated against COVID-19 under the ongoing National Covid Vaccination Program, based on recommendations of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI). Pregnant women can register on CoWIN or walk-in to the nearest Covid vaccination centre to get themselves inoculated, the ministry said.
