Move over ladies, it s time for men to take over the world of cosmetology. From cosmetic products to cosmetic surgeries, men have become far more conscious of maintaining their self-image like never before. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of cosmetic procedures for men has increased by more than 106% between 1997 and 2012.
A review of the data available in the Indian scenario seems to indicate that the number of men seeking cosmetic procedures has increased by almost 100% between 1997 and 2013. The top three procedures sought by men during this period were body contouring procedures including treatment of male breasts, rhinoplasty and hair restoration.
It s a big misconception that only women are keen to go to any extent to look beautiful. Over the last few years, there's been a huge boom is men's aesthetic surgery. Women want fine definition, men wants high definition. From getting a firm jawline to carving a six pack, demands vary. Today, thanks to medical advances, you can even look like Brad Pitt!
Different strokes
Research shows that men opt for cosmetic surgery for primarily two reasons to look better and to get that cutting edge in their professional life. With increasing competition in the job market, perennially looking younger has become imperative.
Leading cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Mohan Thomas elaborates, 'Depending on what phase of life they are in, they are ready for surgery. The younger folks come in for Rhinoplasty or cheek bone or chin definition and yet others for body contouring and surgical management of male breast or gynaecomastia.'
Middle aged men or the ones who are settled in life come in for management of various stages of aging whether it be non-surgical with fillers or surgical being facial rejuvenation.
Dr. Thomas emphasis, 'Some people want even better defined deltoid muscles. High definition is done differently. In spite of going to the gym regularly and having a chiseled body, you may not get that exact six pack look the way you want it because these are very specific muscles and the muscle mass may not be present. Using the navigation system, fat can be injected into the needed muscles so they look even bulkier. Then I can see each muscle grow in real time. Of course it is important to realize what you come with. A six pack is possible only when there is adequate muscle mass.'

Look: Chiseled
Procedures needed: Jawline augmentation, hi-definition liposuction. Enhance his jaw and cheekbones and elongate his chin.
Who can opt for it: An average or good-looking kid.

Look: Muscular

Procedures needed: jawline re-contouring, liposuction, brow lift and perhaps a blepharoplasty.
Who can opt for it: The common banker dad kinds who want to look much fitter as he has a paunch now. The mid-40 kind who are going through mid-life crisis.
