Cory Monteith with his girlfriend Lea MichelleA British Columbia coroner has confirmed that Glee star Cory Monteith died from a heroin and alcohol overdose. The 31-year-old was found dead in a hotel room in Vancouver on Saturday. Monteith played quarterback/singing star Finn Hudson on the hit television series which also co-starred his girlfriend Lea Michelle who's been grieving his death.

In a statement, the coroner's office said: 'There is no evidence to suggest Mr Monteith's death was anything other than a most tragic accident.' It said a post-mortem examination had determined 'a mixed-drug toxicity involving heroin and alcohol' was the cause of death. It's believed he was alone when he died.

Monteith had a history of drug abuse and spent time in rehab earlier this year, checking into a drug addiction treatment facility in April. He has been quite open about his substance abuse problems telling Parade magazine in 2011 that he had starting using when he was 13 and by 19 was in rehab when his mother and friends intervened. He has been part of Glee since 2009, gaining worldwide stardom playing the good guy Finn Hudson. In 2011, he won a Teen Choice award for top actor in a comedy. The show's cast won a Screen Actors Guild award for an ensemble in a comedy the prior year.

Perhaps it's the bright limelight but celebrities of all colours seem to be particularly vulnerable to substance abuse. Robert Downey Jr, Kurt Cobain, Charlie Sheen or close home Sanjay Dutt and Manisha Koirala have all battled substance abuse problems in their time.
