Those who are not vaccinated could be more be more vulnerable to the highly transmissible Delta variant. The Delta variant, which was first detected in India last year, is being blamed for roaring Covid-19 cases in the United States, mostly in areas with low vaccination coverage.
Addressing the media at a White House briefing, Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said that the Delta variant is spreading with "incredible efficiency" and now accounts for more than 83 per cent of the virus circulating in the United States.
The latest White House data also revealed unvaccinated people account for 97 per cent of Covid hospitalizations and deaths in the US.
Walensky called the Delta variant "one of the most infectious respiratory viruses" she has seen in her 20-year career. She urged people who are not vaccinated to take the Delta variant seriously, stating, "this virus has no incentive to let up, and it remains in search of the next vulnerable person to infect."
