India has administered 489 million Covid vaccine doses.
Amid concerns and doubts about the safety of Covaxin, Bharat Biotech has issued a statement to clarify that its Covid-19 vaccine is totally safe and that it follows uncompromising policy on safety and quality.
The Hyderabad-based vaccine maker stated that its manufacturing facilities at the Genome Valley, Hyderabad, are fully audited and approved by regulatory authorities, and all batches of Covaxin were manufactured and released from there, as of date.
Every batch of the vaccine is subjected to more than 200 quality control tests, and then samples submitted to the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL), Government of India. The batches are released commercially, one after approval/release by CDL, the company clarified.
Since early June, the company commenced manufacturing of Covaxin at its sites at Malur, Karnataka, and Ankleshwar, Gujarat. Vaccines manufactured from these facilities will be ready for supplies in September, based on the company's 120-day timeline for manufacturing, testing, release, regulatory approvals, and distribution, Bharat Biotech said.
Bharat Biotech issued this clarification after Covid task force member N.K. Arora told a news channel that the supply of Covaxin has been slowed down because the first few batches at the company's newest facility in Bengaluru were not of the right quality.
