The Centre has asked the northeast and hill states to speed up the vaccination drive and focus on the 60+ age group. In a review meeting health secretary Rajesh Bhushan pointed out that vaccination coverage in this category is unsatisfactory in Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Meghalaya. He told the states to quickly complete the first dose coverage among the 18+ population and focus on the 60+ age group and complete double vaccination of these beneficiaries.
The novel coronavirus has infected more than 220 million people worldwide, and claimed over 4.56 million lives since the disease outbreak in Deccember 2019. The US has the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 39,905,855 and 648,106, respectively, according to the Johns Hopkins University. In terms of infections, India holds the second place with 32,945,907 cases, while Brazil records the second highest number of deaths at 583,362. Meanwhile, global vaccination tally stands at 5,427,586,210, as per the University's latest data.
