The Delta variant has been found dominant in the majority of samples of Covid-19 patients in Tamil Nadu. It is believed to be the most contagious of all known variants, with research suggesting that it spreads faster and has the potential to evade the immunity provided by vaccines.
Dr. Selvavinayagam, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Tamil Nadu government told IANS, that out of the 2,614 Covid-19 samples sent for genomic sequencing, the results for 1,881 have arrived, of which around 73 per cent are Delta variants.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Delta variant of COVID-19 has spread to more than 100 countries and is on the way to becoming the most dominant Covid strain globally.
