It is indeed alarming that the value of a life is so cheap is India. And what's even more surprising is that it seems to be going down. In the case of 2010 drug trials, the victims' kin were paid Rs 3.2 lakh as aganst 2.2 lakh this year, according to an analysis by the Union Health Mininstry shared with the Parliament yesterday. There were around 211 deaths due to clinical trials of new drugs till June 2011 as against 668 in 2010 and 438 in 2011 respectively.
This sad state of affairs is partly due to the fact that there are no rules when it comes to clinical trials in the country. And Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, our Union Health Minister himself confessed to the same. "The government expects to finalise these guidelines soon keeping in view the rights and well-being of trial subjects," Azad said in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha. According to him, thedraft copy of these guidelines are ready and they are now seeking comments from the public.
