India had the world's second-highest number of people suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD), according to a new study published in The Lancet. As per the official data, 138 million Indians were impacted by kidney disease in 2023, following China at 152 million.
The global study, coordinated by experts at the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), examined health data from 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023. It was discovered that chronic kidney disease was the ninth-leading cause of death worldwide, killing approximately 15 lakh people last year alone.
"The countries with the highest number of individuals with CKD in 2023 were China (152 million; 142 164) and India (138 million; 129 148), with the USA, Indonesia, Japan, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, the Philippines, Viet Nam, Thailand, and T rkiye all having more than 10 million adults with CKD," the report says.
Chronic Kidney Disease is a condition where the kidneys become incompetent in the process of filtering the waste and excess fluid in the blood. This breakage accumulates gradually and may cause renal failure, which may need dialysis or transplant.Symptoms are mild and are not noticeable at the onset and thus most individuals do not realise that they have CKD until it has been determined to be at an advanced stage.
Experts note that several lifestyle and health disorders predispose people to the risk of having kidney disease. These include:
The kidney disease is sensitive at an early stage. When kidney is already impaired, fatigue, leg swelling, urine colour change and frequency, and even nausea can be manifested.Physicians emphasise the need to make frequent check-ups to their health and particularly to individuals who have diabetes or hypertension because detection at an early stage can alleviate or eliminate additional harm.
Kidney health to a significant extent depends on lifestyle. Adequate consumption of water, moderate consumption of salt, a balanced diet, and the maintenance of normal blood sugar and blood pressure can help a lot. It is also necessary to avoid overconsumption of painkillers and stop smoking. To people who are diagnosed with CKD, it is advisable to monitor the kidney performance with diet modifications that will help reduce the rate of the disease.
