What is Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)?

Chronic Kidney Disease is a condition where the kidneys become incompetent in the process of filtering the waste and excess fluid in the blood. This breakage accumulates gradually and may cause renal failure, which may need dialysis or transplant.Symptoms are mild and are not noticeable at the onset and thus most individuals do not realise that they have CKD until it has been determined to be at an advanced stage.

Risk Factors of Chronic Kidney Disease

Experts note that several lifestyle and health disorders predispose people to the risk of having kidney disease. These include:

  1. Diabetes and Hypertension: These two are the most prevalent causes of CKD.
  2. Obesity: The additional weight of the body may harm the kidneys in the long run.
  3. Smoking and Alcohol: Both raise the stress on the kidneys and reduce the amount of blood flowing.
  4. Uncontrolled Use of Painkillers: Repeated use of some of the non-prescription drugs may cause damage to the kidney tissue.
  5. Family History: Another thing that can contribute to the health of the kidney is genetics.

Symptoms of Chronic Kidney Disease

The kidney disease is sensitive at an early stage. When kidney is already impaired, fatigue, leg swelling, urine colour change and frequency, and even nausea can be manifested.Physicians emphasise the need to make frequent check-ups to their health and particularly to individuals who have diabetes or hypertension because detection at an early stage can alleviate or eliminate additional harm.

Ways to Prevent and Manage Kidney Disease

Kidney health to a significant extent depends on lifestyle. Adequate consumption of water, moderate consumption of salt, a balanced diet, and the maintenance of normal blood sugar and blood pressure can help a lot. It is also necessary to avoid overconsumption of painkillers and stop smoking. To people who are diagnosed with CKD, it is advisable to monitor the kidney performance with diet modifications that will help reduce the rate of the disease.
