Children's Day: 4 points the Indian government should take note of!

Children s day (also known as Bal Divas) in India is celebrated every year on 14th of November (birthday of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru) to increase the awareness of people towards the rights, care and education of children. Jawahar Lal Nehru always had a vision and worked for the education, wellbeing and welfare of children.

The Global Nutrition report has cited that 2.5 crore Indian kids underweight due to malnutrition. These are the government figures - child labourers in India are 4.3 million, whereas non-government evaluations place it at 10 times more. A large number of Indian children, about 9.84 million, are out of school. The problems faced by children in India cannot be solved in isolation. Below are a few points which are important to be addressed at this point in time:

  • Revision of No-detention policy of Right to Education Act - A large majority of states believe that the no-detention policy should be amended out of the Right to Education Act because of the deteriorating quality of education.
  • Malnutrition - India has the world s highest demographics of children suffering from malnutrition said to be double that of Sub-Saharan Africa with dire consequences. Detrimental and often undetected until severe, undernutrition undermines the survival, growth and development of children and women, and diminishes the strength and capacity of nations.   • Drop-outs from schools - There is 25% dropout at primary level and alarming 42% drop out rate at elementary level of schooling.
