Chennai has been affected with worst rains in the past100 years. Various parts of the city are flooded and life has come to a standstill. Railway tracks, roads, airport runways and all other means of transport have been crippled due to water logging. The weather department has warned of heavy rains in Chennai and northern Tamil Nadu over the next three days. The government has declared a holiday for schools in Chennai and neighbouring Kanchipuram district.A flood alert has been issued along the banks of Adyar river.
To ensure people are safe and immediate help in available to citizens, the Chennai Corporation has announced emergency contact numbers for all regional zones of the city.

People are also coming out to help those who are facing the brunt of the floods. Many people are helping those stranded in the floods by giving them accommodation and food. Restaurants or cafes like Old Madras Baking Company have appealed people who are stranded to drop in at their nearest outlet as they are offering food and tea &coffee. Another start-up called Chef Monk which provides home cooked food to people has also offered their services for free in this crisis and have promised to deliver food.
