It keeps diabetes under control: A study published in the year 2004 in the journal Food & Function, stated that Indian gooseberries, thanks to its constituents like gallic acid, gallotanin, ellagic acid and corilagin have anti-diabetic properties that help lower blood glucose level, treat diabetic neuropathy and lower incidences of heart diseases in diabetics [1].

WHO estimates that diabetes, heart disease and stroke together will cost about $ 333.6 billion over the next 10 years in India alone. These numbers are on the rise particularly with the increasing rates of inactivity and obesity worldwide.

High blood pressure (hypertension) can lead to and make worse many complications of diabetes, including diabetic eye disease and kidney disease. Most people with diabetes has good chance of developing high blood pressure during their life. Apollo Sugar conducted free diabetes screening across India since August 2015. After the survey on over 2200 diabetics in Chennai and Bangalore, the experts at Apollo Sugar noticed a high rate of hypertension among these individuals. Here are 10 healthy resolutions every diabetic should follow for a better life.

  • 44% of women in Chennai and 39% of women in Bangalore denoted a normal blood pressure, while the maximum prevalence i.e 19% was seen among men in Bangalore. The percentage of occurrence was the least i.e. 5% among women in Chennai
  • Subsequent studies also suggest that the females in Chennai are more overweight when compared to their counterparts in Bangalore
  • Apollo Sugar has extensively worked towards diabetes management in both the cities and all the enrolled patients in the diabetes management program have observed a positive result. Their diabetes is under control and at targets for total Cholesterol as per ADA guidelines. (Read: A diet plan diabetics can use for better blood sugar control)
  • All the female patients enrolled in the program were at control for Triglycerides and there is a noticeable reduction in triglycerides level of male patients.

The above chart clearly indicates that prevalence of obesity is higher in women i.e. 16%* than in men i.e. 6% in Chennai. Obesity and diabetes go hand in hand; fatness is often side-tracked by treating it as a repercussion of sedentary lifestyle. Obesity has emerged as a major cause of diabetes with over 80% adult diabetics in India being overweight. Obesity increases body’s resistance to insulin. As insulin is a hormone that controls blood glucose levels, controlling obesity makes the body more sensitive to insulin and diabetes can be controlled.
