The All India Chemists and Druggists Association is all set go on strike on May 10 to protest the steep cut in profit margins. They are also protesting the new drug policy, including the fact that no reductions were made in trade margins as proposed in the new drug policy.
Members of Bangalore City Chemists and Druggists' Association said that they'd had received instructions from the national body. 'The margin should ideally be fixed by the central government. In the past few days, our margins have been slashed by many companies though there is no final word from the Centre,' said Ravindra Kumar, secretary, Bangalore City Chemists and Druggists' Association.
Earlier retailers got a 16% margin, while wholesalers on drugs sold with prescription got an 8% margin. On the other hand over-the-counter drugs earned the wholesalers a margin of 10% and retailers 20%. The new drug policy has also reduced the margin on scheduled and non-scheduled drugs to 5% for wholesalers and 15% for retailers.
There are also some other allegations of traders being framed in criminal cases for spurious and sub-standard drugs for which they're not responsible.
