Chandigarh reported four fresh cases of swine flu taking the total number of cases in the city to 18. In order to contain the situation the health department is emphasising on providing chemoprophylaxis to the high risk contacts to limit the spread of infection.
Patients tested positive and their contacts have been instructed to remain quarantined for a period of one week. GMSH- 16 and the civil hospital in Manimajra have a 24X7 emergency ward with all necessary equipment and life-saving medicine. All government hospitals in Chandigarh have the facility to collect the sample (throat swab) for swine flu detection.
PGIMER is the top referral lab for the testing of H1N1 by RT PCR. The recommended drug for prevention and treatment of swine flu is Tamiflu (Oseltamivir). As per the Centre s guidelines it is provided only to high risk contacts.
The H1N1/09 virus is a variation of the swine flu virus which doesn t spread from swine. The virus is extremely contagious. The virus enters the body through the respiratory tract.
