A two-month-old baby with congenital heart disease undergoes life-saving surgery at Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital, Mumbai.
In a remarkable feat of medical expertise, the team at Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital in Mumbai successfully treated a two-month-old infant, Snehal Kumbalvar, the child of a visually impaired couple, for a rare and life-threatening heart condition. Snehal, who had been blue and struggling to breathe since birth, was diagnosed with Truncus Arteriosus Type 2, a congenital heart disease characterized by a hole in the heart and improper connections between the heart and lungs. Without urgent surgery, her condition would have rapidly deteriorated and could prove fatal.
The six-hour surgery was completed without complications, and Snehal's recovery was monitored!
Dr Pradeep Kumar Kaushik, Senior Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon at Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital, explained the complexity of the surgery: "The baby had a large hole in her heart and abnormal connections to the lungs. We performed an open-heart surgery to correct this, including creating a handmade tube to restore normal circulation. It was crucial to act fast to save her life."
Dr Supratim Sen, Senior Paediatric Cardiologist at Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital, noted, "Snehal presented to us in a very sick condition; post-surgery, Snehal's heart is functioning normally. Seeing her smile, healthy and breathing easily, was incredibly rewarding."
Snehal's father, who works at a stationary shop, expressed his thankfulness: "We were worried about how we would afford this treatment, but the hospital management supported us emotionally and financially. We are thankful to the doctors who gave our daughter a new life."
