0-Year-Old Woman Undergoes Successful Removal Of Beetle Nut Stuck In The Airway
Mrs Mridula Sinha is a 70-year-old woman with a complex medical history of chronic kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension, and heart issues, including a pacemaker. While sleeping, she swallowed a piece of betel nut that accidentally got lodged in her windpipe. Two days later, Mrs Sinha found herself in the Emergency Care Unit of Manipal Hospital Sarjapur Road, struggling with a dry cough and difficulty breathing. Initially requiring oxygen support, her condition prompted further investigation. While a chest X-ray showed no significant issues, her low blood pressure led to her transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU).
A high-resolution CT scan revealed the foreign body (swallowed beetle nut) obstructing her airway, which had resulted in post-obstructive pneumonia. Under the expert care of Dr Suhas H S, Consultant Pulmonologist, Manipal Hospital Sarjapur Road and his medical team, she underwent a bronchoscopy and foreign body extraction with a cryoprobe. Despite her advanced age and underlying health conditions, the procedure was a resounding success. "Given her age and multiple comorbidities, the procedure was high-risk, but our careful approach made all the difference. It's rewarding to see her recover after such a serious event," said Dr Suhas.
Her oxygen levels improved, but she continued to experience low blood pressure, requiring additional medical support. The team worked tirelessly and with unwavering dedication to optimize her treatment, introducing medications to help stabilize her condition. She was then moved from the ICU to a regular ward and eventually discharged. She was stable at the time of her release, maintaining acceptable oxygen levels with minimal support.
This case highlights the vital role of specialized care in managing elderly patients with multiple health challenges. Today, Mrs Sinha is on the path to recovery and is scheduled for follow-up appointments. She will continue to receive compassionate medical care, ensuring her ongoing health and well-being.
