We all have faced the similar problem reading the doctor s prescription, which always seemed to be in Greek or Latin. But this will soon be a thing of past as the Union Health Ministry is planning to come out with a simple solution to this age-old trouble. Not only patients but also the medicine shopkeepers life will become a whole lot easier with this gazette notification that asks doctors to prescribe medicines in capital letters to make them legible . Also, doctors have to prescribe the generic cheaper versions of the drugs, according to the notification.
When will be the notification be issued?
The notification is likely to be issued by the Ministry within a week s time according to sources. A senior Union Health Ministry official told PTI that not following this notification wouldn t entitle doctors to a penalty or punishment. Like all other MCI regulations, this too will govern the doctors, he said.
What did J.P. Nadda say?
Health Minister J P Nadda had shared the concern voiced by some MPs in Parliament last year that illegible prescriptions may have serious implications for patients and could lead even to death in some cases.
The central government has approved to amend Indian Medical Council Regulations, 2002, providing therein that every physician should prescribe drugs with generic names in legible and capital letters and he/she shall ensure that there is a rational prescription and use of drugs, Nadda said.
