On Wednesday, the Punjab government claimed that the number of cancer cases in the state is not as high as it has been projected in the last few years. The state health minister, Madan Mohan Mittal said that though cancer was a matter for concern, the numbers weren’t higher than other states in the country. ‘The health department had conducted a door-to-door survey of the entire population of Faridkot district on pilot basis and reached the conclusion that there are not more than 130 per lakh suspected cancer patients in the districts,’ he said. The state health department went through a painstaking data-collecting task where hundreds of workers went door to door asking families about cancer patients. The field workers read out a dozen symptoms which could indicate cancer. The data showed that of the 5.38 lakh people contacted, less than 3000 showed symptoms that could be construed as signs of cancer. About 800 people had confirmed cases of cancer. Suspected cancer patients will be checked by doctors in health centres and specialists at secondary and tertiary levels. Even then the figure of 132 patients per lakh is not alarming, the state health minister added. Also Read - J&J faulty implant victims await response

He added, ‘Moreover, this is not merely a data-collecting activity. Patients who were suffering from cancer and those who were showing signs of the disease will be monitored and taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. They will not be charged and the families, which need monetary help, will be given with money from the chief minister cancer treatment fund.’
