A hallucinogenic drug or psilocybin pill extracted from a type of mushrooms known as magic mushrooms has successfully helped long-term smokers quit, according to a new study.
For the study, researchers involved 10 men and five women who smoked 19 cigarettes per day for a period of about 30 years. They were give different two varying doses psilocybin pills in separate sessions. Their craving for smoking was analysed. and after 6 month 80% of participants taking the hallucinogenic drug did not smoke, which is more than double the rate of quitting as what you typically see with the gold standard medication, according to the researchers.
Although it is a small study, the results are quite promising in the field of use of psilocybin for smoking. However, the participants were also taking therapy sessions which raises a doubt whether the resultant effect can be attributed completely to magic mushrooms.
The study is published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology.
