cola cancer

In the light of the recent news that Coke and Pepsi are now altering their recipe to avoid getting a cancer warning label on them,we did some investigation ourselves to get to the base of it.

Firstly, as per the news, it is unclear if the change will be applicable to India. They mention California and the US in all that we read.

All colas use a caramel colouring which contains a chemical called 4-Methylimidazole. This is formed as a by-product of fermentation in foods. It is used in the manufacture of pharma drugs, photography chemicals, dyes and pigments etc. Coca cola and Pepsi have asked their caramel suppliers to modify their caramel manufacturing process to decrease the levels of this chemical.

The spokesman for the Food and Drug Administration in the US said that a consumer would have to drink more than 1000 cans of soda a day in order to reach levels in which it can be deemed to cause cancer, that too in rodents. What is surprising that this whole exercise is being based on a single study which was done in lab mice and rats.
