After accepting the dreadful diagnosis of breast cancer followed by grueling sessions of radiation therapy, chemotherapy and a mastectomy, the agony doesn't end there for breast cancer survivors. The real challenge for women after surviving the disease is to overcome the low self-esteem and body image issues that often exist after losing their breast(s) to the disease.

'It is natural for such patients to have a low self-esteem and for them to be conscious about their body but with care and support from their better halves they can feel more confident and positive,' says Dr Dhairyasheel Savant, Consultant Cancer & Reconstructive Surgeon, Asian Institute of Oncology. 'Psychological impact of breast removal is a major concern in breast cancer survivors. In fact, survivors serve as a motive for clinicians and researchers to address the multifaceted needs of those living with, and beyond the breast cancer diagnosis,' he adds. 'Artificial breasts and special bras for breast cancer survivors are now easily available to improve their self-image.' says Dr Savant. The experts discuss the two most commonly used options for improving external appearance and boost confidence in breast cancer survivors.

1. Prosthetic devices: 'Prosthetic devices are prescribed post mastectomy (breast removal) to preserve breast contour and shape. They can be either in the form of implants which can be inserted into the mastectomy cavity or as an external add-on that can be used freely. Prosthesis for external use can also be customised and made according to a lady's breast size and shape,' says Dr Kabra. (Read: Relapse of breast cancer what you should know)

2. Breast reconstruction: 'Several studies have proven the importance of post-mastectomy breast reconstruction for improved psychological, social, emotional and functional benefits of breast reconstruction, including improved psychological health, self esteem, sexuality and body image. It is also an important determinant of long term health and well being for breast cancer patients,' says Dr Kabra. 'Breast reconstruction can be done either by using the patient's own tissues or it can be done using supplementation with implants, in case tissues do not give enough bulk to form adequately sized breasts,' says Dr Kabra.

'It is important to explain your needs to the surgeon and understand the pros and cons of such a procedures. While all the procedures have their own problems, understanding them beforehand results in higher rate of satisfaction,' concluded Dr Savant.
