According to a 2008 data, cervical cancer was one of the biggest killers of Indian women claiming one life every seven minutes. In 2008, breast cancer which claimed one life every 10 minutes was hardly seen as a threat and was believed to be an urban woman's disease. But now, breast cancer has upstaged cervical cancer among Indian women. World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), analysed the data from the Indian Census in 2011 using Golobocan 2012, a software developed by the IARC itself. However, leading a healthy lifestyle can reduce the chances of having breast cancer.

Experts too, believe that breast cancer is the most common cancer among Indian women

According to reports, Globocan 2012 shows that breast cancer affects 25 out of every one lakh women in India whereas cervical cancer affects 22. Indian Centre of Medical Research (ICMR) director Dr Soumya Swaminathan says that there is a direct link between the incidence of cervical cancer and lack of hygiene and sanitation and as the countries develop and the sanitation improves, the rate of cervical cancer also goes down. Here are 10 tips to detect breast cancer early.

She also explained that why the breast cancer rates increase as countries inch towards development is not well studied, and India is currently going through a phase which every developed country has gone through.

A recent study by Metropolis India also had similar findings. Out of the samples tested, 15.7 % samples tested positive for breast cancer, 9% for cancer of lip and oral cavity, cervix uteri and lung contributed to 7.4% and hemato-lymphoid contributed to over 7% of the cases.
