New Delhi, 12th December 2014: Dr. Mark Watson (Head of Major Floras, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, UK) visited Patanjali Yogpeeth Haridwar to discuss research work of Patanjali Yogpeeth in the field of medicinal plants with Acharya Balkrishna, ayurvedic physician, botanist and co-founder of Patanjali Yogpeeth. During the discussion, Acharya Balkrishna showcased the work of Patanjali Herbal Research Department.
Acharya Ji highlighted the work of 'World Herbal Encyclopedia' and its future implications. He informed that 'World Herbal Encyclopedia' is an extra ordinary work which unfurls the information of medicinal plants, its uses in healing minor to complex diseases. It contains approximately 15,000 live paintings of medicinal plants. These plants are traditionally well known and in frequent use of mankind in different parts of the globe. He also highlighted that a larger part of the world would be benefited by this work. The work will prove a blessing for forest dwellers (tribes), rural and urban masses, doctors and for the whole global society at large.
Acharya Ji also discussed the way Sanskrit nomenclature and Shlokas making the basis of medicinal use and pharmacology of plant. He also mentioned that there are changes required in the modern nomenclature system because names and properties mentioned till date are in difficult language and we didn't find good illustrations and images to make the learning easier. He also presented a new system of nomenclature of plants. Acharya Ji emphasized a unique code system of nomenclature for all the plants of the world. In the new nomenclature system, it will be very easy to remember plant names and identify their botanical properties.
In addition, Sanskrit names of various medicinal plants which have been referred through Shlokas in the ancient scripts and medical texts, have been included with their meanings in 'World Herbal Encyclopedia'.
Dr. Mark Watson highly appreciated the work of Patanjali Yogpeeth in the field of medicinal plants. He was very surprised to know that nearly 50% Gymnosperms of the World have medicinal properties. He also met the whole team of Patanjali Herbal Research Department. 'The work is unique and is beneficial for mankind', Dr. Watson added.
