The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation s draft guidelines for installation of cell phone towers has put schools, colleges, child rehab centres, old age homes and other such institutions out of bound for such antennae. It has also made it necessary to get the consent of people living on or below the terrace of residential buildings. Before putting towers, you d also need a building owner s nod, an NOC from the society and consent of at least 70% occupants. There will be no towers within three metres of such institutions and even nearby antennae shouldn t be directed or positioned towards these buildings.
Existing mobile antennae which violate these rules will have to be removed. We have submitted this draft policy and we will invite suggestions and objections from the public, said a civic official from the development plan (DP) department.
