Want to eat that roadside pani puri, but scared that it might be unhygienic ? The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has a solution. It has decided to impart hygiene and sanitary lessons to street vendors. According to the chief secretary at Mantralaya, the decision was made in order to provide safe street food to the masses. The BMC along with the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) will organise the training programme as directed by the state.

The team has identified a few areas for the pilot project which will include vendors near railway stations, colleges and tourist spots. The training team will include a junior officer, sanitary inspector, medical health officer and deputy executive health officer. The additional municipal commissioner, Manisha Mhaiskar, said that the officers will train the vendors on safe foods, good hygiene while cooking, storing and handling. The drive is aimed at lowering the number of infections caused due to eating unhygienic foods.

When asked if training illegal vendors was a move to provide them with a license, the commissioner said that he in no way intends to give them a licence to hawk their wares, and that this move is in public interest. He said that a large number of people fall ill because of this unhygienic food, and this is just a move to keep people safe. However, according to Aftab Siddique, an activist from Bandra this training will only encourage more illegal vendors to set up shop.
