The H5N1 avian influenza virus which had hit Kerala s duck rearing region Kuttanad, has been brought under control. The total number of ducks culled till now is 1.80 lakh and more 50,000 poultry will be culled today. (Read: Bird flu in Kerala: State on high alert for spread of H5N1 avian influenza)
The H5N1 virus has not infected humans so far as samples collected from persons showing flu-like symptoms were negative, Health Minister V S Shivakumar said.
In move to be emergency ready, the government has equipped hospitals in Alappuzha to combat any case human infection of the virus. The Minister also informed, that the health department has kept around 3 lakh people under observation and visited around 80,000 households in the affected areas. The duck farmers who have lost their bird even before the avian influenza was confirmed, will be compensated financially by the government.
