World Organ Donation Day 2024: In a remarkable case that underscores the life-saving impact of organ donation, a one-year-old girl suffering from biliary atresia has been given at Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital, Mumbai. This procedure not only transformed Baby Shanaya's life (name changed) but also highlighted the crucial role that organ donation plays in saving lives.
A rare condition where bile flow from the liver is obstructed, leading to severe complications. From birth, Shanaya endured deep yellow discolouration of her eyes, abdominal distension, and progressively worsening health. By the time she reached Narayana Health, her condition had deteriorated to the point of severe drowsiness, bleeding in stools, jaundice, and a significantly distended abdomen.
In a powerful demonstration of the life-giving potential of organ donation, Shanaya's mother, who was a perfect match, became her daughter's living donor. The 12-hour surgery was successfully performed, marking a crucial turning point in Shanaya's journey toward recovery.
Following the transplant, Shanaya's recovery was closely monitored by a multidisciplinary team.
Led by Dr. Ashok Thorat, Senior Consultant in Pediatric Liver Transplant, and Dr. Aditya Kulkarni, Associate Consultant in Pediatric Gastroenterology & Hepatology, quickly diagnosed biliary atresia. "Shanaya's condition was extremely critical when she arrived. Stabilizing her for the complex surgery was a significant challenge," explained Dr. Ashok Thorat. The team provided extensive preoperative care, including draining abdominal fluid, antibiotics, and nutritional support, to prepare her for the life-saving liver transplant, he added.
