Bihar Dengue Update -- 50 cases reported

Bihar is said to have 50 dengue cases reported till Sunday, as per statements from health officials. 'Nearly 20 new dengue cases have been reported in the last three days in Patna and the total number of people afflicted with the disease rose to 50,' said Sambhusaran Singh, a health department official. He said the new cases have been reported from new localities here. 'We are concerned as dengue is spreading to other areas in Patna,' he said.

Sambhusaran Singh said officials have been asked to kill mosquito larvae and to clean areas. They have been directed to take preventive measures to check its spread.

He said the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) has set up a separate ward for dengue patients and the state government has issued an alert regarding the disease. Dengue claimed one life in Patna last week when Abhay Kumar from Transport Nagar died, officials said.

PMCH official Sudhansu Kumar said a special dengue ward with 30 beds has been set up with 10 beds reserved for the emergency cases. Dengue cases have been reported from Saharsa, Muzaffarpur, Nalanda, Aurangabad, Jehanabad, Samastipur, Saran, Nawada, Begusarai and Bhojpur districts, a health official said.

Causes

Dengue refers to a tropical disease caused by four different types of virus. It is usually transmitted by an Aedes mosquito that is infected with a dengue virus.

Prevention

Here are a few simple and practical tips to keep dengue at bay:

  1. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are known to bite humans during the day and their most common breeding grounds are man made containers. Therefore, it is advisable to not have any stagnant water around. Remember to clean out empty flower pots and not to over water potted plants. If the container that contains water cannot be emptied, remember to cover it well when not in use.
  2. Turn over empty pails and buckets, so that they do not collect excess water.
  3. Use mosquito repellants regularly. Apply it well on all exposed areas, during the day as well as at night.
  4. Make sure your window and door screens do not have any holes. If so, block those areas properly to eliminate mosquitoes.
