How weird it may sound but this is actually true! Yes, Belgian scientists are searching for people to donate their poops because they need them for their research. The research will be done for illnesses ranging from bowel disorders to neurological diseases and allergies.
According to the Straitstimes.com report, the researchers at Ghent University hospital are performing faecal microbiota transplants on patients.
They extract tiny organisms living in the colon, good bacteria from donors to transfer it to sick patients in hope of repopulating their guts.
Biomedical researcher Hannelore Hamerlinck reportedly said, "How do we find donors? That's not so easy. People do not always want to donate their faeces. It is also hard to talk about, but we started this campaign in the press here in Flanders."
However, according to the scientists, not only bowel disorders but for many other diseases, faeces may prove to be an asset in finding remedies.
For the last few decades, various studies have suggested an association between disruptions in gut microbiota and illness, including allergies and cancer.
Hamerlinck said, Microbes are at the centre of the system. The bacteria in the gut produce hormones that will affect the brain. They also help us to clear out the bad ones and digest certain things.
To participate in the research donors must be in good health. They must be tested over a period of 3 months before becoming eligible to donate. But at first, they have to fill up an extensive questionnaire.
As per as Hamerlinck, often people come forward as donors when a loved one has struggled with bowel diseases.
