Abdoned-babyWould you adopt a baby with a deformity? Your answer might be yes, but the tiny baby girl abandoned at a Sringar hospital, might think differently. Four days ago, a new born baby was abandoned in the casualty ward of G.B. Pant Hospital in Srinagar. The reason for her abandonment has been attributed to her cleft lip and cleft palate. Doctors at the hospital have been rallying around the infant, trying to find somebody who will adopt the baby, but of no avail.

The deputy medical superintendent of G.B. Pant Hospital, Dr Muhammad Salim Khan, said that it was appaling to see the state of the child, just because of a repairable deformity. He asks how long will people just express their concern verbally, its time we started taking some action. There are over 5,000 NGO's in Shrinagar, and none of them are willing to help the child. Doctors worry if the baby will be able to survive this callous attitude. For the moment, the baby has been in the intensive care unit. Talking about the baby's deformity, Dr Khan says that the baby needs to be primarily adopted, because the hospital cannot take care of her forever. According to him the child will have to undergo reconstructive surgery, and she will be perfectly alright.
