Baba Ramdev, the yoga guru, has been in the news recently for not-so-good reasons. The most recent news was about how his Patanjali Ayurveda sold Awala Murabba package with a manufacturing date of October 20, 2016, and its expiry date on October 19, 2017. Before this, he was in the news for flouting FSSAI norms and selling noodles with insects and ghee with fungus in it.
But, he is all set to be in the news again as a full-length biopic on his and his close friend Acharya Balkrishna will air on Sony TV on May 1. The biopic is 90 minutes long and is written and directed by Kaveta Chaudhry who has 'Udaan' the teleserial to her credit.
The biopic traces the life journey of Baba Ramdev from a yoga teacher to a corporate leader with his Patanjali group. Patanjali's expansion from a hardcore yoga and Ayurveda institution to a thriving business with a huge turnover is very intriguing. However, I wonder if this biopic will answer the questions which most of us have.
1. Did Baba Ramdev have a hand in Nestle's Maggi controversy? The moment Maggi was withdrawn from the market, Baba Ramdev launched his instant atta noodles. Did he just try to cash in on Maggi's downfall or was it all his doing?
2. If Baba Ramdev believes in living healthy and eating healthy then why is his company manufacturing products like instant noodles, biscuits, Soan papdi, Moong Dal Namkeen, choco flakes, corn flakes and more? How are these healthy in any which way? Hasn't he in hundreds of his yoga camps advocated eating home cooked, satvik food? Aren't all these products unhealthy/junk?? Or he wants people to believe that all these products are healthy because they are manufactured by him?
3. Why has he launched cosmetic products? Kesh Kanti, suhag tika, lip balm, Tejus Beauty cream, coconut hair wash, toothbrushes, body cleansers and what not? How are these products any different than those already in the market? Are his soaps and shampoos sulphate free, are they phthalate free? Where is he going with it? I am not against expanding a business, but use a brand name like Patanjali which is associated with a healthy life?
4. And, what's with all this grooving with Shilpa Shetty?
