Every year, about two lakh people get diagnosed with kidney failure. Only 2500 get access to kidney transplants.
India is a country teeming with a huge population, but it is very difficult to get any support for the cadaver donation programme (organ transplant from a brain dead donor). Apart from kidneys, other organs like the heart, liver, intestines, lungs and pancreas, cornea (eye), bones and bone marrow and skin can be transplanted.
What is now needed to make this work for India is
a.Better awareness among people/relatives of the brain-dead patient b. Adequate infrastructure in the hospitals to maintain the brain-dead patient till such time that an adequate match for the donation is identified.
c. Co-ordination, matching and distribution of such organs between hospitals
