Salt is an important ingredient for all the cuisines around the world. Salt adds taste to our favourite dishes. However, we often blame salt for weight gain, increased risks of high blood pressure, acidity, etc. This happened because we only read studies done on the adverse impact of consuming too much salt.
Recently, a study published in the journal Lancet has indicated that we may have been avoiding salt a little too much. The study said that few people should not worry, because those who consume moderate or average amounts of salt with their meals. A little amount of sodium won't result in an increased risk of heart diseases and stroke.
According to the Siasat news report, the study was conducted with 94,000 participants from around the world, including subjects from India- a country where salt is used excessively in curries and other food items.
The study finds that for most of the people who consume salt, there is no increased risk of heart diseases, except for those who consume over five grams of salt a day. Five grams of salt is the equivalent to two and a half teaspoons per day. So, if you consume more than this measurement then heart disease risk is confirmed.
By increasing your portion of healthy fruits and vegetables, dairy products, potatoes and other potassium-rich foods you can lower the negative impacts of salt in your diet.
Andrew Mente, the first author of the study from Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada reportedly said that although the World Health Organisation recommends consuming fewer than two grams of salt per day in order to prevent cardiovascular diseases But there is scientific evidence also to support the fact that people who consume such levels of salt have better health than people who don't.
