In a recent development, AstraZeneca, the biggest producer of the COVID-19 vaccine, has begun the global withdrawal of Vaxzevria, citing a surplus of available updated vaccines since the pandemic began. The company has also decided to withdraw the vaccine's marketing authorizations within Europe. In a statement, the company said, "As multiple, variant COVID-19 vaccines have since been developed, there is a surplus of available updated vaccines."
Best known as the earlier AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, Vaxzevria occupies a key position in global vaccination initiatives. Born out of the combined efforts of the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, this viral vector vaccine received initial applause for its affordability and storage simplicity. The vaccine was seen as a powerful weapon in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, despite its mass adoption globally, Vaxzevria experienced backlash because of a few severe, albeit rare, side effects, including blood-clotting disorders (which can turn fatal and cause death in serious cases). Due to these safety issues, many countries limited its usage, especially within certain age groups. Regulatory watchdogs like the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and others have kept the vaccine's safety record under close monitoring leading to updated guidance and advisements.
The decision to withdraw the vaccines comes days after the company admitted that vaccine takers are prone to suffer severe blood clotting side effects. In a statement produced at the court, the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker stated that their COVID-19 vaccine can cause side effects such as blood clots and low blood platelet counts. The company's application to withdraw the vaccine was submitted on March 5 and became effective on May 7, as per media reports.
According to the experts, one must be careful of the unusual signs and symptoms that can show up after taking the jab. Here is what experts want you to know about the rare side effects of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
Speaking to TheHealthSite, com, Dr Pratibha Sidheswari said, "An individual might experience minor reactions such as discomfort, swelling or redness around the area where the vaccine was injected. These are commonplace occurrences that usually disappear on their own after a few days. Additionally, some people might feel tired, have headaches, muscle pain, chills, fever, or nausea, which are signs that the body is proactively developing immunity against the virus".
After the latest court hearing of the cases against the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines by AstraZeneca revealed, experts stated that there are certain rare side effects that are associated with the jab. "While the usual side effects are mild and temporary, there are reports of rare but grave circumstances. An infrequent side effect is Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS) which is a serious condition leading to blood clots with reduced platelets. Even though this is a rarity, it needs immediate medical intervention due to its severity. Allergic reactions like rashes, facial and throat swelling, and breathing trouble are other possible rare occurrences that necessitate urgent medical help," Dr Sidheswari further added.
As per experts, vaccines not only protect you from suffering the worst side of the infection but also provide your immune system a boost that can help your body fight the other foreign viruses which can be lethal for your body. Talking about COVID-19 vaccines and the ongoing controversy regarding the side effects, Dr. Rishikesh Dessai, Consultant, Department Of Internal Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said, "As we are all aware, the COVID-19 vaccine has definitely saved many lives, but there have been few cases of blood clots following COVID-19 vaccination reported since 2021, some of them being mild cases and some being severe."
He further added, "The condition called TTS, that is thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, is rare but serious, with features like blood clots and low platelet levels, so one should be aware of it rather than panic and should get early treatment for effective management. So anyone experiencing symptoms like headache, blurred vision, chest pain, shortness of breath, persistent abdominal pain or lower limb swelling with pain and easy bruising or tiny blood spots over the skin should report to the doctor immediately, especially after a few weeks or months of vaccination."
