Renowned Flutist Dipak Sarama Death Passes Away At 57 leaves An Enduring Legacy For Assam Music Industry
Guwahati: Dipak Sarama passed away on 3rd November 2025 at around 6:15 AM in Chennai, following a prolonged illness. He was born on 23rd of August 1968 in. Panigaon Village which was formerly undivided Kamrup district Assam. He had emerged as one of the Assam's most celebrated musicians. All these years he had kept the bamboo flute with deep emotional resonance. He has given a lot to Indian music industry, where he cultivated a unique style that were well-known to classical traditions and Assamese folk.
Earlier he had been undergoing a treatment in Guwahati before he wass shifted to Hospital In Chennai and he was on ventilator support for past few days.He composed Music for several Assamese flims too. His recent project included working on Luitak Vetibo Kune and he has given some masterpieces like Story of love and Beyond the Horizon where he showcased his talent blending Indian classical and contemporary sounds.
In his role as a performer, he captivated audiences across India and abroad. He was known as the graded artist with all India radio and Darshan Kendra Guwahati performing both solo recitals and Jugalbandis that showcased his ability to fuse flute with other instruments. One of his notable performances was at a university where his soulful music followed by a Tabla player, left audience, mesmerised. His hold over Assamese folk tunes is something that sets him apart.
Beyond being an exceptional performer, he has also made significant contributions as a composer in music director. He composed music for Assamese films and was working on another project currently before passing. He also contributed to television serials and appeared in instrumental segments for many shows.
Significant part of him is his role as a cultural ambassador for Assam and his performances across Europe and Asia has helped him introduce the regions music richness to global world and not only this but he has also collaborated with late musical singer Zubeen Garg that also bridge the gap between traditional and popular music. His work continues to inspire countless young musicians.
Dipak Sarma was really successful, but his later years were marked by health challenges. He battered civil liver, complications, and multiorgan failure, and was he also suffered dengue and COVID-19. In October 2025, he was helped by chief minister of Assam with five lakh rupees and it was the fund given to him to support his health . It also shows the struggle that is faced by senior artists in the region. Even despite a lot of medical efforts, He breathed his last in Chennai, surrounded by family and close associates.
He has always been a great performer, composer and a teacher and has said the bar so high for many musicians, His music has always made Assamese community proud. His melodies will continue to echo through his recordings, compositions, and the countless people he has inspired. Even though his flute has fallen silent now, his legacy will continue to inspire and will remain a guiding light in the life of many people and for the generations to come.
