Arun Jaitely loses 17 kg in 3 weeks after diabetes management surgery

Arun JaitleyUnion Finance Minister Arun Jaitley recently underwent a gastric bypass surgery for diabetes management. Following discharge on September 10 after the surgery, he was readmitted to the hospital for a routine post-surgery check-up. The 61-year old has lost around 17 kg in the last three weeks post-gastric bypass surgery. His test reports show that is sugar levels are under control. His requirement of insulin and other medications has reduced. Dr Pradeep K Chowbey, Executive Vice-Chairman of Max Healthcare, said that his medication will be re-adjusted as per his reduced requirements which is a positive sign. Plus, his creatinine levels have also lowered from 4 to 2, indicating significant improvement in kidney function. All other tests show normal results and he is likely to get discharge tomorrow.

The surgery isn't for everyone. Dr Goel told TheHealthSite.com, 'The procedure is advised for those patients who are at least 25-30 kg overweight with a BMI which is 32.5 or above. People with severe diabetes, hypertension or obstructive sleep apnoea associated with obesity are also likely candidates. Women who have irregular periods and are unable to conceive due to obesity can also opt for the surgery.' The surgery is also very effective for type 2 diabetics since it increases insulin resistance and helps control blood sugar.
