Exemplary coordination between Clinicians, Medical Social Workers, Traffic and Police authorities between Amravati and Mumbai, enabled a life-saving heart transplant on a 48year old male. This transplant became possible when the brother and father of a 34yr old male from Amravati, consented to donate his organs after he was declared brain dead at Zenith Multispecialty Hospital, Amravati.The heart transplant surgery was successfully performed by a team of doctors led by Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund.
The young 34yr old donor was rushed to the hospital after suffering from brain hemorrhage. His father and brother were counselled by the Medical Social Workers at the hospital, after which, they consented to donate his Heart, Liver, Kidneys and Corneas. Another milestone was achieved towards the cause of Organ Donation as this marks the 1st heart donation & 3rd ever cadaveric donation from Amravati. The donor hospital was not registered for organ harvestation and transplant, however, the hospital took special permission from Directorate of Health Services, to make this donation possible. Transported to Mumbai via a chartered flight, the heart was transplanted into in to a 48yr old male from Kurla, who had recently been diagnosed with Ischemic Cardiomyopathy and had undergone a CABG previously. Post the bypass surgery, he started developing Intractable Ventricular Arrhythmias and was put on temporary Ventricular Assist Device, post which, following which he was put on the super urgent transplant list. The donor heart was transferred out of Zenith Multispecialty Hospital, Amravati at 02.57PM, following a Green Corridor to the airport, taking off in a chartered flight at 03.23PM, landing in Mumbai at04.54PM. Speaking about the surgery, conducting surgeon, Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, It is seen that people from interior pockets of the state, some of whom are not aware of the concept of Organ Donation, are also stepping-up to the case, when counselled. Each donation makes a difference and we are grateful to these families who have set a golden example, for us all to follow . Speaking about the condition of the patient, Dr Anvay Mulay said, The patient has responded well to the treatment. Dr S Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, This surgery was possible owing to the 1st Heart and 3rd cadaveric donation at Amravati; we will forever be obligated to the donor families for their support. The patient s father showed enormous courage in time of grief, making this humbling decision. We hope that these examples encourage the larger part of society to be informed and come forward in support of the cause .
