As a means of curing Parkinson s disease, Japanese scientists have just been given permission by the government to begin clinical trials for reprogrammed stem cells which can cure Parkinson s disease. Reportedly, Jun Takahashi, a neurosurgeon at Kyoto University s Centre for iPS Cell Research and Application, into
Parkinson's patients brains, dopamine-producing neural progenitor cells which are derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSCs) form adult donors who are healthy will be injected by Takahashi and his colleagues. Also, the team will have 7 participants who will be observed for two years once they are injected with the dopamine-producing neural progenitor cells. Speaking about the injection, into the patients striatum approximately 5 million cells will be injected.
According to Jun Takahashi, By using (induced pluripotent stem) cells on Parkinson s disease, be the world s first clinical trial.
Earlier, the scientists were concerned that the application of these cells can result into malignant tumours. However, in the last year, it was reported by Takahashi and his colleagues that for two years, the injected cells can survive in the monkey brains and in a primate model of Parkinson s disease, the treatment improved the symptoms.
This is the third iPSC clinical trial approved in Japan, as per science. Treating age-related macular degeneration and heart disease are the other two trails. Hopefully, the Parkinson s patients will benefit from it in the near future.
