The deadly dengue fever not only depletes your platelets count but also affects your eyes to a great extent. This dangerous and debilitating disease is not just dangerous but scarier than thought. Eye specialists are of the opinion that it can cause damage to sight, congestion in eyes or blindness in rare cases. Till date, Delhi has reported more than 280 dengue cases and two people have died this year due to the mosquito-borne disease. While there is not enough data in India on the epidemiology of eye disease in dengue patients, experts are of the view that it could range anywhere between five to six percent. In patients hospitalized with dengue, it ranges between 16% and 40.3%, which is very high, according to the leading English daily TOI. Here is how dengue takes a toll on your heart health.

According to a research published in 'Survey of Ophthalmology', a medical journal, patients suffer from damage to the eyes when their platelet count drops. However, in most cases the ocular symptoms range between two days. Once the retinas of the eyes get damage due to dengue, there isn t an effective treatment to restore it. Active surveillance and steroid therapy are the usual modalities of treatment. In some cases immunosuppressive therapy to hasten clinical recovery was done by doctors. Dengue has been termed as the world's most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral disease by many experts. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the global incidence of dengue has grown dramatically in recent decades and about half of the world's population is now at risk.

There is no specific treatment for dengue/severe dengue, taking precautionary measures such as using mosquito repellents, wearing clothes that cover your arms, legs and feet and keeping the surroundings clean can reduce the risk. Early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below 1%. Severe dengue is also a leading cause of serious illness and death among children in some Asian and Latin American countries.
