A patient taking ayurvedic treatment for piles was later diagnosed with cancer at SRV Hospital

He was taking Ayurvedic treatment, thinking that he had piles.

A Team lead by Dr. Pradeep Shriyan, Consultant General and Laparoscopic Surgeon at SRV Hospital, Goregaon Mumbai performed Sigmoid Colectomy on 65-year-old Mr. Abdulla Shamsher, this is an operation to remove part of the left side of the colon known as the sigmoid colon. Mr. Abdulla Shamsher had a bleed per rectum. For which he was taking Ayurvedic treatment, thinking that he had piles. But the problem remained unsolved. He was then referred to SRV Hospital for a second opinion. He met Dr. Pradeep Shriyan who suggested few test to diagnose the correct problem. Mr. Shamsher was examined thoroughly at SRV Hospital. Dr. Jay Kotecha, Gastroenterologist, at SRV Hospital did a colonoscopy; he then noticed an abnormality in rectum. His biopsy report showed a cancer in the sigmoid colon. Hence CT scan was suggested.

After investigating the patient in-depth; doctors came to conclusion that he is suffering from malignancy, which can be operated and removed. After discussion with patient family, Dr. Shriyan and Dr. Uday Pawar decided to do open surgery & remove the cancerous part of the colon. It was complicated & a complex surgery, which nearly took three hours. Based on patients report, chemotherapy was started under the observation of Dr. Priyanka Das at SRV Hospital. It will take 5 years for the whole treatment as there should not be a residue of cancer in his body, added Dr Das. Dr. Pradeep Shriyan says, Mr. Shamsher is prime example of how people ignore simple signs like bleeding per rectum. Hence the treatment gets delayed. However, in this case we have successfully managed to treat the patient. He further said, without relying on self diagnosis, the patient should seek early medical expertise to avoid most of the untoward complications.
