A BJP MP claims tobacco cannot cause cancer

according to BJP MP Ram Prasad Sarmah there was no proof that smoking tobacco led to cancer.

In India, tobacco-chewing is not just a habit; it is a religion! Tobacco has had a great adverse impact on many communities and has been directly responsible for the plight of those who are slowly wasting away from the ravages of lung and oral cancer.Over a third of all cancers are believed to be related to the use of tobacco.

However, according to BJP MP Ram Prasad Sarmah there was no proof that smoking tobacco led to cancer. The MP from Tezpur told the media here: "There is no proof that smoking tobacco leads to cancer. There has to be proof that smoking cigarette leads to cancer.

'One must prove that smoking is medically or chemically harmful to one's health,' he added.The Bharatiya Janata Party leader referred to two of his acquaintances who he said used to smoke 60 cigarette every day and also consumed liquor, but enjoyed a healthy and long life. 'One of them is still surviving,' he said.

Earlier, BJP MP Dilip Gandhi, who heads a parliamentary panel on subordinate legislation, sparked a huge row after saying that there was no Indian study to confirm that use of tobacco led to cancer. Here are a few symptoms of oral cancer you should never ignore.

Here are a few tips to keep oral cancer at bay

Quit Alcohol: Alcohol is an established risk factor for oral cancer. The carcinogenicity increases many folds when consumed along with tobacco.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss your teeth daily as bad oral hygiene is a known risk factor for oral cancer.

Regular Self Oral examination: Examine your oral cavity in good light once every month to look for non-healing ulcers, areas of bleeding, abnormal patches or any swellings, as these may be signs of cancer and early detection means better cure.

Regular Dental Checkup: The dentist may be the first person to detect oral cancer, also inform him about any sharp tooth causing repeated trauma.

Avoid Increased Sun Exposure: UV rays are a known risk factor for cancer especially of the lower lip. Try and limit sun exposure and ensure that you wear sun screen whilst going out.
