An earthquake of around 6.8 magnitudes has rocked several states of India. Although the epicenter of the earthquake was in Afghanistan, tremors were also felt in the neighbouring state Pakistan. A powerful earthquake shook parts of India, Afghanistan and Pakistan on Sunday evening, officials and residents said. The tremors jolted buildings in the national capital and surrounding regions, residents said. The quake was also felt in Srinagar and elsewhere in Jammu and Kashmir besides Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
Earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir
An earthquake of 6.8 magnitude rocked Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday afternoon, sending panicked residents running out of their homes and other buildings into the streets. A quake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 3.58 p.m. today (Sunday) in Jammu and Kashmir. Its epicentre was in Hindukush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 190 km, Sonam Lotus, director of the regional meteorological office, said. No damage to life or property was yet reported from anywhere in the state. An earthquake rocked parts of north India on Sunday, the tremors being felt in the capital and its surrounding region, residents and officials said. Earthquake rocks Himachal
Many areas of Himachal Pradesh were rocked by an earthquake on Sunday, an official said. However, there was no loss of life. Tremors were felt in many parts of the state, an official of the meteorological office told IANS.
7.1 magnitude quake jolts Pakistan
The tremors hit Kabul hard, Xinhua news agency said. Pakistani media said the tremors were strongly felt in Lahore and other parts of Punjab province. An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale jolted parts of Pakistan on Sunday, the media reported. The quake struck at a depth of 236 km with epicentre determined in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region, Dawn online quoted Pakistan Meteorological Department as saying. Tremors were felt in Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Swat Valley, Chitral, and Pakistan-admiistered Kashmir. No casualties has been reported yet. Tremors were also felt in parts of Afghanistan, and in New Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan and Kashmir in India. Fear and panic spread among residents who rushed out of their houses.
